Railroad Demolition at Air Force Base - McChord AFB
This railroad demolition contract was awarded and performed in two phases. Phase 1 required demolition of railroad crossings at major arterial routes on base. Railroad demolition at road crossings required extensive traffic control as well as coordination with Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company. Because of the sensitive nature of this phase of demolition, the work was required to be performed in the evenings on weekends. Abandoned railroad was also removed from all other improved paved areas and site restoration was performed. Site restoration consisted of paving and landscape improvements.
Phase 2 required the removal of approximately 3 lineal miles of abandoned railroad from unimproved areas on base. Work also consisted of clearing and grubbing, and the removal of other related structures, which included fuel piping and fuel pits and other associated rail car distribution systems.
To the maximum extent possible, all railroad demolition debris was transported off-site for re-use and/or recycling. Site restoration consisted of paving and landscape improvements.
