Asarco Residential Soils Cleanup - Everett, WA
Located in Everett, Washington, this site surrounds the former Asarco Smelter. Now a large residential area, surficial soils contain high concentrations of arsenic, lead, and other heavy metals. The Washington State Department of Ecology directed and managed the site investigation and subsequent remediation action.
The project consisted of the removal and disposal of soils contaminated with arsenic and lead from the residential yards. The excavated soils were replaced with clean backfill topsoil, and new sod lawns. Also included was the removal and replacement of fences, landscaping, concrete sidewalks, and drives, and retaining walls. Due to the residential nature of the site, extensive traffic control was performed. In addition, storm water runoff and erosion control required major mitigation efforts to prevent sedimentation of storm drainage systems and release of arsenic and lead impacted soils to nearby waterways
